This is my fourth trip to this magical destination. The trip is co-hosted with Barbara Barrett, a native of South Africa. She designed the trip with an artists viewpoint, we actually meet South African artists, go to their studio and paint together on location. The dates above are the actual dates of the trip. We encourage participants to arrive early and enjoy the many activities and sites around Cape Town.


This is a fine trip to share with a spouse or friend. We will primarily tour until we arrive for two days in the little fishing village of Arniston and in Knysna where we will have our own painting studio.

Travel time to and from South Africa is two days.

A $500.00 deposit is required and the balance due in January 2018, three months before departure.

Arrive in Cape Town by:
April 5th and 6. We are accommodated in the magnificent Commodore hotel at Cape
Town’s famous Waterfront complex. We stay in this luxurious hotel for two nights. Breakfast
included. We met and greet on the first evening with a welcome drink and introductions. (Check
out their website at: or These two days are at your leisure and we suggest several options to see in beautiful Cape Town homework.aspx. Of course you can arrive a few days earlier if you wish to see and do more in the great City. We suggest taking the cable car up table mountain, or a trip around the peninsular, or visiting Robben Island, or seeing Kirstenbosch gardens. Things to do in and around Cape Town, highlighted by your City Sightseeing tour. The majestic Atlantic coastline is a must-see with Camps Bay, Mariner’s Wharf and the suburbs of Clifton, Seapoint and Green Point. Wildlife lovers may wish to visit the Two Oceans Aquarium, the World of Birds, Monkey Jungle or the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. For those with a head for heights, a cable car ride up Table Mountain offers breathtaking views of the City Bowl and the more adventurous traveler may wish to journey down the 112 meters via an abseiling rope! Take time to explore the city centre shops, the Castle of Good Hope, St. George’s Cathedral and the District Museum. We will dine together at the waterfront each evening.
April 7th We will visit a traditional Wine Estate nestled in historic Stellenbosch and have a wine tasting, cellar tour and lunch. We continue on to visit South African Artist family The Elliott’s Dale and Mel and their gracious and hospitable wives Janny and Corinne Elliott. Mel will demonstrate for us at their studio, and we will be given supper. We are accommodated in traditional bed and breakfast in this typical rural farming community.
April 8th and 9th. The next day we have lunch with the Elliot’s (included) and depart for the picturesque and historic seaside fishing village of Arniston, where we are accommodated in a magnificent Ocean front Hotel for two nights. Dinner will be included both nights, We will paint in the fishing village, the unique thatch cottages of the local people. Lunch here for own account.
April 10th. We may have a morning tea stop en route, in the pretty village of Swellendam, this is an important historic town of the Cape. After breakfast we depart for a luxurious Game park, Botlierskop, where we will be given lunch, a game drive, and dinner “out of this world”, where the fare is cooked to our order and choices of local wild meats are part of the vast choice.That night we sleep in luxury tented accommodation in the park, here we will share two personsper tent. This game farm has a limit of 15 luxury tents so most of us will need to share two per tent, however the accommodation and experience is upmarket (Glamping). A true African experience. We will safari in open vehicles through the bush to view African game.
April 11th. A morning walk with the lions is optional and for your own cost. Those who participated in this on our last trip had a wonderful experience. So many felt this was the highlight of their African experience. We then head for Knysna, a town in the heart of the Garden route, stopping at Wilderness beach for lunch overlooking the ocean.(included in your fee).
April 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. We arrive at Belvedere lodge where we will be accommodated for 5 wonderful nights in chalets. Here we will settle in to paint both local scenes and from the photographs we will have gathered en route from Cape town. We will have breakfast and a mid-morning tea served with bake of the day on the days we stay at the Belvedere lodge to paint. Dinners are included in your fee, however lunches at Belvedere are for your own account. There is a quaint little pub on the premises. We visit the Knysna Heads where the Indian Ocean enters the lagoon. This is a wonderful painting opportunity. That afternoon we visit the Knysna Waterfront complex, where shops, restaurants and the opportunity for a boat ride awaits us. Non painting partners have an array of choices from
magnificent golf courses, to Forest walks. There is an optional extra of visiting The Elephant park for a close encounter of feeding and walking with these magnificent creatures.
April 16th. Filled with the spirit of Africa, we take you to the George airport for your departure home.

May 6-17 2018. Grand tour of Southern Ireland. $3200.00

This trip is hosted by a master storyteller named Batt Burns, who will accompany us the entire time. This is my sixth trip with Batt, he is definitely the star of this trip. He will lead us around the country he loves and will fill us with the history, stories, colorful villages, ancient monuments and the rich oral traditions of Ireland. This is also a painting trip. Barbara Barrett, who lives in Ireland, will also teach and share her amazing talent in watercolor with us. This trip involves a lot of touring and is perfect to share with a spouse or friend.

A $500.00 deposit is required and the balance is due in February, three months before departure.

Ireland’s landscape is one of emerald green countryside, rainhazed lakes, awe-inspiring coastal bluffs, medieval castles, ancient monuments, vibrant towns and cities as well as colourful villages. The country has a proud and congenial people, rich oral traditions and music, and a strong sense of place and community. Batt Burns, a former school principal and now an international entertainer and author will be tour director and guide. He has been leading tours of Ireland since 1992.


Here is the day by day itinerary:

Day 1 May 6th. Depart USA for your overnight flight to Ireland

Day 2. May 7th. Arrive at Shannon Airport where you will be met with a cead mile failte ( a hundred thousand welcomes) by famed Irish storyteller, Batt Burns. Head south along the scenic Shannon drive via Tarbert and Tralee to Dingle, a town steeped in history and the gateway to a large Gaelic speaking area. Dinner and overnight in a town centre hotel.

Day 3. May 8th. After a hearty Irish breakfast take a stroll around Dingle town, which is also an important fishing port and has many interesting shops, cafes and galleries. Batt will tell you about FUNGIE the world famous dolphin resident of Dingle Bay. Later move west where you will have wonderful views of cliffs and offshore islands, including The Blaskets, the subject of Tomas O’Crohan’s famous book, The Islandman. Visit the 8th century Gallarus Oratory and other Christian sites. Batt will also talk about St. Brendan, The Navigator. All of this area featured in the David Lean movie “ Ryan’s Daughter”. Dinner and overnight in the same hotel and there are many great pubs with Irish music.

Day 4. May 9th. Early morning departure for Ireland’s tourist Mecca, Killarney for a most exciting day amidst exquisite scenery. For 250 years, the Killarney Day Tour has been the most famous visitor excursion in Ireland. Mountains, lakes, woodland & legend in scenery that has no equal worldwide. Travel by coach from our base at Old Weir Lodge to Kate Kearney’s Cottage where you will travel through the world famous Gap of Dunloe by pony and trap. Upon arriving at Lord Brandon’s Cottage you will board an open boat for a cruise along

Killarney’s lakes toward the historic Ross Castle. Please browse through the site to get a better idea of the trip. Dinner and overnight in a Killarney hotel. There is much night entertainment to see.

Day 5 May 10th. After a leisurely breakfast stroll around the town of Killarney. Later move out to the gardens of Muckross House, a Victorian mansion with a .rich history. In the late afternoon visit Ross Castle. Dinner tonight will be in Tralee after which you will enjoy an exhilarating performance by The National Folk Theatre. Return to your Killarney Hotel.

Day 6. May 11th. Bid farewell to Killarney and travel over the Cork/Kerry border to Blarney Castle and kiss The famous Blarney Stone. Ample time will be allowed for shopping at the largest Irish Goods Store in the country. Arrive at Kinsale, one of Ireland’s most historic towns. Dinner and overnight in Acton’s Hotel.

Day 7. May 12th Morning Walking tour of Historic Kinsale with one of Ireland’s leading guides, Dermot Ryan. Art Activities with Karlyn. Dinner on your own in the town famous for its gourmet restaurants.

Day 8. May 13th. Half Day tour of Cork area Possibly Jameson Distillery at Midleton or Cobh Heritage Centre or The English Market in Cork City or The Honan Chapel in University College College Cork. Dinner and overnight in Acton’s Hotel.

Day 9. May 14th. Travel along scenic villages of West Cork to Bantry Bay and Glengariff where you will take a short ferry ride to the island garden of Garnish with its wonderful flowers and exotic shrubs from many countries of the East. Cross the Caha Mountain Pass for overnight in Batt’s home village of Sneem, on the Ring of Kerry, where a great welcome will await you.

Day 10. May 15th. After a hectic eight five days of travel it is time to relax and unwind for a day. Have a leisurely breakfast, after which Batt will give a short talk at 9.30 a.m. on the “ The Stories and Folklore of The Sneem Area” in the meeting room of the hotel. Batt will lead a walk around the colorful village, which has some interesting pieces of public art, and people are then free to paint. After dinner at 6.30 p.m. in Sneem Hotel you will be guests of Batt Burns for an old-style Irish night in a village pub at 9.00 p.m.. You will hear a very fine folk-singer, Marian O’Shea, as well as some top class traditional musicians. A group of local set dancers will demonstrate a 200 year old dance and Batt will surely contribute a few stories. Villagers will join in the fun.

Day 11. May 16th. Farewell to Sneem and travel to the beautiful and historic village of Adare. Time for painting and photography. Move along via Limerick city to Bunratty for overnight. Attend a medieval banquet at Bunratty Castle which should be a fitting climax to your Irish Tour.

Day 12. May 17th. Transfer to Shannon Airport for return flight home.

September 5-16. Art Adventure in Spain with Karlyn and Bonnie. $2200.00

This trip is two trips in one. The first eleven days are a serious on location painting experience visiting beautiful little white villages on the Southern coast of Spain. The second week we will fly to Venice and begin an adventure on the Norwegian Star cruise ship sailing
through the Greek Isles.

This will be the sixth time that Bonnie and I return to this lovely facility in Spain because we love this place so much. It has perfect weather, beautiful flowers and a real “home away from home” feel. The food, painting sites, Denis and Sally, our hosts, make this a great painting holiday. They have a wonderful web site at You can see the grounds, some of the rooms and check out other artists who go there. The villas are like an old Spanish Hacienda in the middle of ten acres of a fruit farm and one mile from the Mediterranean Sea. The grounds have a courtyard, large swimming pool and a tennis court. They have miles of trails though olive gardens for those who like to exercise. The cook is really excellent. We will have breakfast at our villas and lunches and dinners will be together, sometimes out and sometimes in.

Our trip will begin in Malaga at the well located and very clean boutique Hotel Carlos V. This hotel has WiFi, laundry, hair dryers, bar and a small refrigerator. Check out.

This hotel is located in the heart of the historic district near the Alcazaba, the Roman ruins, the Picasso Museum and is a perfect way to visit this beautiful city. We will take you out for tapis at the El Pimpi, an institution in Malaga and another Bodega nearby. On Saturday, September 8th, we will go by bus to our home away from home, La Finca Del Nino. We will venture out to paint in the white villages nearby. After ten days painting on location in Spain, we will depart for the Malaga airport for our cruise from Venice to the
Greek Islands. My friend Bonnie Broitzman will co-host this fun painting experience.

Denis and his wife, our hosts, are also “foodies” and artists and they know what we would like for painting sites. The sites are wonderful….everything from panorama’s; little white villages; street scenes, etc. The hacienda itself has many wonderful painting sites

Join Karlyn Holman and Bonnie Broitzman on a spectacular cruise with breathtaking scenery of the Greek Isles. We have booked the Hotel Belle Arti for our first night and for two nights after this cruise. While in Venice, Karlyn and Bonnie plan
to share their teaching insights with any participants who would like to join them. This trip is open to anyone who wants to travel, not
strictly artists.


Saturday, September 15. It is always a good idea to arrive a day early when going on a cruise.
Arrive in Venice the day before and take a ferry for 17 Euros to the last stop called Zatterre. If
you are traveling with four or six other people, you may want to hire a private water taxi or
vaporetto to take you to the Zatterre stop. This would cost about 100 Euros and would be
close to the cost of the ferry and a lot faster. When you get off the ferry at the Zatterre stop,
our hotel Belle Arti is a half block straight ahead. Join us for a meet and greet at 6:00 pm in
the courtyard, followed by our welcome dinner at San Travoso Restaurant. Dinner included.
Sunday, September 16-23. Meet at 9:00 am for a walk about. We will show you where the
cruise line is and some of our favorite places to paint. Spend the morning checking out
Venice. Board the Norwegian Star Cruise ship by 2:00 pm to get settled in for our spectacular
5:00 pm departure to the Greek Isles. Breakfast. Dinner on the ship.
Monday, September 17. Cruise to Kotor, Montenegro. Walled city with cobbled streets,
UNESCO world history site.
Tuesday, September 18. Cruise to Corfu, Greece. Blue water and tranquil hillside villages.
Wednesday, September 19. Cruise to Santorini Greece. Whitewashed villages clinging to the
sides of the sea cliffs,
Thursday, September 20. Cruise to Mykonos, Greece. Most popular island in the Cyclades.
Friday, September 21. Sea day. Karlyn and Bonnie will meet with interested participants. Karlyn will demo many different ways to paint a picture on location from 10:00 to 12:00 in the morning. Bonnie will demonstrate how she composes a painting with tips on editing from 2:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon. Bring in any sketches or paintings done while on the cruise to share with the other participants. Bring your IPhone and/or IPad so we can share photos.
Saturday, September 22. Cruise to Dubrovnik Croatia. 13th century walled city.
Sunday, September 23. Arrive in Venice by 8:00 am in the morning and walk over to our Hotel Belle Arti. Meet in the courtyard at 6:30 pm for a critique cocktail to share any sketches, paintings or experiences you want to share. Dinner on your own at one of the many nearby restaurants. Breakfast
Monday, September 24. Meet at 6::00 pm for a cocktail critique, followed by our farewell
dinner at the Antica Locanda Montand Restaurant. Breakfast and Dinner included.
Tuesday, September 25. Depart for home. Breakfast.
